WELCOMEMembership Meeting – 19 May 2012 Where: Webb-Wesconnett Branch Library Auditorium Time: 1:30 p.m. Speaker: Ann Staley, CG, CGL Topic: 1940 U.S.
Population Census - The Ins and Outs! Ann will be providing information and a presentation on the 1940 Census - a continuation of her short presentation given in March. This newly released census is full of possibilities for extending your family knowledge. However, at the present time it is not fully indexed; so, with over 132 million people enumerated and only about 20+% indexed, how do you find who you are looking for? What do all the codes and lines mean? How did the tabulators tampered with it? And what information does it really tell us about the "Greatest Generation"?
Jacksonville City Directories Abstraction Project As mentioned at the last meeting, JGS is embarking on a Jacksonville City Directory Abstraction project. One of the questions we are asked is: What [doctors, lawyers, cemeteries, etc.] were in Jacksonville in [1897, 1900, 1930, etc.]? What would give clues/provide the answer? The Jacksonville City Directories. Where are the Directories? At the Jacksonville Public Library, downtown, in paper format and some are online in JPG format (one page at a time). Not easy to access for most out-of-towners. Some of the members have already photocopied about 14 of the books that we would like to start with. So, on April 28th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Webb-Wesconnett Library auditorium we need volunteers - with laptop computers - to come and help us type the data. It is a straight typing job in a word processor, no complicated forms. Once we have made sure that we have most of the kinks worked out, we will open the typing up to those who would like to do typing from home. The resulting product will be placed on our website member's only page. This is your reward for helping the society and the genealogy community - you get the first use. After about 6 months, we will make the data available to all website visitors. Now - for those who do not have a laptop, but would like to come and help, Ann has 3 extra laptops that she could bring; however, you will need to email her (astaley@comcast.net) and let her know that you want to use one - first come, first served. Ann will also have several proofing jobs that need to be done that she will be bringing for those that would like to help, but do not want to do typing. There is enough work for everyone! See you there.
