BROWARD, KEMPS

This message is in search of any information you might have on Captain David KEMPS of New Berlin, who operated steamers on the St. Johns from the 1870's past 1900. I have virtually nothing on him other than a few newspaper mentions from the mid-1880's. Anything would be of value - a cemetery inscription, birth/death/obituary info would be welcome. I believe he lived past 1910, but am not certain. Also, if there are any known descendants in the Jacksonville area, that information would be very welcome, as I would like to obtain a photo of Capt. KEMPS. I am in the process of compiling research on a steamer (the MYSTIC) which he was a part owner with future governor, Napoleon Bonaparte BROWARD. I will be writing an article on the MYSTIC based upon the research, and the information on KEMPS and BROWARD (have plenty on the governor's life) will close out the article. Any help which you can give me on Capt. KEMPS, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Contact William J. Bray, Jr. or by snail mail to 918 Dawnwood Road, Midlothian, VA 23113. CHAPMAN

Thanks to the efforts of other family members my family has traced it's roots back to a member of the family born in Mississippi in 1862 named Andrew Joseph CHAPMAN. This ancestor of mine was orphaned at a very young age and reportedly did not remember anything of his mother and only that his father's name was Joseph. We have learned that for a while he lived with an uncle in Jacksonville until he ran away at the age of 15 (approx.). Right now I do not know, but am hoping, that this uncle was his father's brother and not his fathers brother-in-law. I'm hoping to be able to trace my family's origins back farther through this uncle, since there is precious little information about Joseph CHAPMAN. At present I do not have a name for this uncle but know only that he was a white male, I'm hoping his last name was CHAPMAN, and I would guess that he owned some property of some kind, although that is only a guess. Would you know of any place where I could obtain, preferably online, the census data for Jacksonville from 1870? If my dates are correct my only really hope is the 1870 census data, since Andrew Joseph would have run away in 1877-78, just a short time before the 1880 census. Any advice or assistance that you could give would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Many thanks in advance. Contact: Corey Ray Chapman. (Query placed 11 Apr 1999)

HUENECKE, WOOD(S)

I am trying to locate information on my g- grandfather John Thomas WOOD(S). John was born in Dundalk, Ireland in Jan 1882. He and his family came to the Chicago area as a small child. John married his first wife Minnie (Ella) HUENECKE in 1903 in Chicago, Illinois. They had at least one son Robert Steven WOODS 1904, Chicago, Illinois. John played minor league baseball for Jacksonville, Fla., Brunswick, Georgia and Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1916 he played baseball for the Detroit Tigers. According to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, John lived in Green Cove Springs, Florida. I am sure that his first wife Minnie died young and John remarried. A short time ago we found out that John and Minnie may have had twin sons and that John left the Chicago area with the twins after he and Minnie seperated ( a fact that is still unproved). If John kept the twins or not we do not know but we think that they would have been born around 1906. If anyone has any information that they think would help us with our search, I would love hearing from you. I have a great deal on the Woods line that we would be willing to share here in the U.S. as well as in Ireland and England. Best of luck with your research. Contact: Patti Woods Crick for more information. (Query placed 6 Mar 2003)
